Counting in the Garden Lesson Plan
- Grades: PreK–K, 1–2
About this book
- Counting in the Garden by Kim Parker
- plain white cotton T-shirts, one per student
- permanent fabric markers, red, yellow, pink, light blue, green
- Sharpie marker
Set Up and Prepare
Use the Sharpie to label the tags with students’ names. Be certain to follow the directions on the fabric markers. Some markers/paints need to be laundered for the color to set.
Look at the pictures on the book. Talk about how the illustrator drew the dragonflies, daisies, and bumblebees. Explain that students will have the opportunity to create similar illustrations on their T-shirt. Have them choose one critter that they will then draw 10 of.
After the shirts have had a chance to dry, give students time to share their creations, counting the critters with their peers.
Supporting All Learners
Remind students that the markers will stain. You may even want them to wear smocks during this activity.
Try the same activity, but instead of a T-shirt, use canvas tote bags, painter's caps, or socks.
