- Plain drawing paper
- Drawing supplies, such as pens, markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Copies of the "Sunny Sunflower" poem for the students
Set Up and Prepare
- Print hard copies of the sayings Molly's grandmother told her. For example: "Walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you." Display the sayings on the wall or board as you read that passage.
- Take digital pictures of the students and print for the bulletin board.
Discuss the following questions with the class:
- How did Molly Lou's grandmother make her feel special?
- What happened when Molly Lou moved to a new town?
- How did Molly solve the problem?
- How did Ronald Durkin feel?
- Why did Ronald feel foolish?
- How did Ronald Durkin change?
- How did the story end?
Step 1: Make a sunflower bulletin board. Use the attached poem in the center top of the display.
Step 2: Help each child make a paper sunflower.
Step 3: Take a picture of the students for the centers of their sunflowers.
Step 4: On each petal, the students should write something that makes him/her special. Depending on the time of year, grades K-1 may need help writing.
Step 5: Attach the flowers to the board at the height of each child.
