Jimmy Gownley Author Visit Kit
Jimmy Gownley developed a love of comics at an early age when his mother read Peanuts collections to him. By the age of 15, he was self-publishing his first book, Shades of Grey Comics and Stories; the series ran 16 issues and enjoyed cult success. He followed this with Amelia Rules!, which became a critical and fan favorite, earning Gownley 13 Eisner nominations and six Harvey nominations. It has been named a Junior Library Guild selection four times, been translated into several languages, and won the 2007 Cybil award for best graphic novel.
While still producing Amelia books, Gownley launched GRACIELAND a weekly webstrip featuring the comic exploits of a Catholic School girl and her family. Gownley produces the strip with his longtime friend, Catholic school educator Ellen Toole.
His latest book, The Dumbest Idea Ever!, is a memoir about his experiences as a teenage cartoonist. Gownley travels around the country talking to students, teachers, and librarians about the creative process and the art of cartooning. He has been an Artist-In-Residence at the Museum of Cartoon Art and The Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center. Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

In this dynamic, funny presentation, the award-winning creator of the Amelia Rules! series of graphic novels takes you on a journey from his beginnings as a teenage cartoonist in the coal regions of Pennsylvania to the New York Times bestsellers list, and talks about the publication of his latest book, The Dumbest Idea Ever! Gownley explains the creative process through drawing and personal anecdotes, and how simple events from everyday life can lead to exciting and creative ideas for stories and art. Students will learn the five simple places they can look to unlock their own creativity, and the presentation ends with the entire group creating their own spontaneous comic book character out of their shared experiences.
This presentation is designed to work for groups ranging in size from 20-200.
